members of the romney/ryan team make that suggestion. they think the media is ready to write the obama comeback story. it's romney's proposition to try to stand in the way of that. by being just as aggressive on tuesday as he was in the last debate. >> how much concern are you hearing from both camps about the fine line they have to walk in terms of attacking while in this pretty delicate town hall style format where regular voters don't like that kind of vitriol? >> it's a good question because, the bottom line is, when you attack people, if i were to attack you right now, your negative ratings would go up. people watching the show would think less of you based on what i said. mine would, too, because people would think less of me for attacking. that's the delicate dance the candidates have to do. i think the town hall makes that a challenge for both romney and obama there. >> jake tapper, our senior white house correspondent, soon to be chief white house correspondent, who knees where he'll go from there? jake, thank you very much. he has a big show today. his guests include ohio sen

and how the romney-ryan team will turn things around. what he has to be careful about is to make sure that whatever he says is going to be in sync with the top of the ticket because some of ryan's positions have been slightly refuted by mitt romney who has made it clear that he is at the top of the ticket and it is going to be his policies that will rule. for vice president biden, he has to whip up the enthusiasm. he also will be trying to make sure voters know that president obama has accomplished something in the past four years. he will try to spell it out just as he did at the democratic convention. and biden will have to be careful not to make one of his famous gaffs. >> he is a great debater on the senate floor but has been known to make a few boo boos for lack of a better word. >> reporter: well, certainly as reporters will be looking forward to whatever he has to say. romney and paul ryan as, you know, against the middle class and taxing the middle class. i think joe biden is going to wrap mitt romney and paul ryan as tightly together as possible and just sort of drop the ryan plan on top it to try to implode the pair. they think that is good ground. as far as paul ryan is concerned, i think he is kind a policy wonk. his problem is he's a numbers guy, and he's up against frankly and i think both runs previous head of the republican party and michael nutter both said that joe biden is a very accessible politician. he tends to put things the way that people get it immediately. he's just got that kind of manner about him. i think that's the -- in some ways, you know, we look at the substance and style. as far as style is concerned, i think paul ryan's fear here is he's too much of a wonk sxort of throwing out numbers. you know, you can expect joe biden to say, gee, i took a look at your numbers and here's what they would do to george next door. ryan has to be careful about that kind of debate. >> the next presidential debate, you're moderating octobe

the medicare issue around his neck i think the republicans roll out what mitt romney did, paul ryan as a good reputation and he is not gaff pro like joe biden. that is the contrast for tonight. gerri: let's talk about the presidential election for a second. the contenders, mitt romney and obama. romney is getting a bum from his performance in the debate. when you look at the swing states, seems to be doing a little better. is this sustainable and does it put more pressure on ryan to have a really good night? >> it is not sustainable. i have a specific reason for that. when you look at this data when you see is the romney campaign was a great performance by romney and a bad one by the president. that shows up and there has been movement. the bulk of a movement has been with women. if you look at the polls, women are in a dead heat between romney and obama. the only republican or the last republican to win against the democrat was george herbert walker bush in 1988. i don't think that will happen. what will happen is you will start to see women shifting back not as far as they were prior to the
